Lithium batteries have an integrated battery management system (BMS) that helps optimize their performance and protect them from operating outside of safe conditions. The battery monitor uses these measurements to calculate the state of charge, power consumption, estimated remaining runtime, and other beneficial information about your battery system. The shunt measures the real-time voltage of your battery system as well as the current draw. These battery monitors require a shunt to be installed on the negative side of the battery terminal. The shunt-type monitor is much more accurate because it measures the actual energy flowing into and out of the battery. If you change the battery type the voltage meter may even be completely inaccurate altogether. Voltage-based monitors are not very accurate because the real-time voltage of a battery will fluctuate based on temperature changes and other environmental conditions. This type of monitor just measures the real-time voltage of the battery and uses it to estimate its state of charge. The most simple type is the voltage-based monitor and frequently comes standard on most mobile power applications. There are two types of battery monitors, shunt-based and voltage-based. Battery monitors also collect and display helpful data such as battery voltage, power consumption, estimated remaining runtime, current consumption, battery temperature, and more. However, they do much more than just provide the state of charge of your battery system. People often think of battery monitors as the fuel gauge of a battery. Let’s take a look at what a battery monitor is and how it can help you get the most out of your battery system.

This might help you to debug errors while arranging the LEDs.ġ) Set the voltage of your variable power supply to precisely to 12.50V.ģ) Rotate the preset resistor clock wise or counter clock wise and bring the readings to 12.50V.Ĥ) Now, reduce the variable power supply to 12.00V, the readings on the serial monitor should show the same or very close to 12.You can make many upgrades to your battery system, but one of the simplest and most useful is adding a battery monitor. When you turn on the circuit, it starts with LED test, where the LEDs glow up sequentially with some delay. The calibration for this Arduino 6 LED battery level indicator circuit must be done carefully, if you did not calibrate correctly, the circuit will show incorrect voltage level of the battery.

The series of 6 LEDs will indicate the battery level. A pre-set resistor is used to calibrate the above setup. The circuit consists of Arduino which is the brain of the system, a potential divider which helps the Arduino to sample the input voltage. If your battery is full, the left most LED glows and you battery is dead or about to die, the right most LED glows. The circuit has 6 LEDs, one LED glow at a time to indicate the voltage level of the battery. When this circuit indicates low battery, you may put the battery to charge. The proposed battery charger circuit will show you how much energy left in the battery, this circuit may be connected to battery, while you prototyping your circuits. Since we concentrate on the prototype during experiment, we care less on the battery. Why Battery Level Monitoring is CrucialĪll batteries have certain voltage limit to discharge, if it goes beyond the prescribed limit, the life span of the battery will reduce drastically.īeing electronics enthusiasts, we all might have a battery for testing our prototype circuits.
